Mali & Max Week 27

L. Arts:
We found our copy of Ella Enchanted so mom read some more aloud to us.

MALI- my language arts lesson introduced the phonograms of QU and X. We made a game board out of my review page and played. I won. I finished lesson 17. It had two new stories in my reader. One was about a fox and a box and I really like foxes.

MAX- I had a lesson about the phonogram OR. We came up with Settings for a story about a storm. I learned about the second job of silent E—making C and G day their soft sounds.

Math:
We played Sum Swamp.

MALI - I did dream box lessons about greater than and less than. I did workbook pages on subtraction in story problems.

MAX- I did some more practice with ordinal numbers and learned position birds, like next, between, over, to the left of, etc. I did quite a few pages in my workbook. I did Dreambox lessons on combining two 2-digit numbers that would make 100.

Science:
We learned about acids and bases. We did a couple of experiments from our MEL science kits. We watched a video on acids and bases. Also one where they tested the pH of a bunch of different bottled waters. Some people claim that drinking more basic water is healthier, but there isn’t evidence to support that.

History:
we learned about the Persian invasion of Greece, the legend of the runner to Marathon, and the Peloponnesian war. The Peloponnesian War lasted about 25 years with a bit of a break in the middle. It caused both Athens and Rome to be weaker so they were vulnerable to invasion.

Tech (Engineering):

MALI- I made some creatures out of clay and toothpicks. I also made some paper flowers with popsicle stick stems. I painted with watercolors. My mom and I made a popsicle stick picnic table for my mouse.

MAX- I worked on my FlipAClip project. Mom helped me make a pipe cleaner penguin.

Music: we didn’t have class this week because of Presidents’ Day. But we did listen to our songs and do our practice on the bells and our other homework.

Other: we had two tumbling classes this week because we had to miss last week so we did a makeup class.

We started working on a storyboard/outline for Max's story about Wally the alien that lives on Jupiter.

M&M Week 25

L. Arts:
MALI: I did a review week to practice mastering more words and improve fluency. We played quite a few Ziggy Zebra games with my flashcards. I read a bunch of the stories in my lesson reader that I have read before.

MAX: I did some spelling word practice. I read the first and second stories in my lesson reader. I started reading Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot vs the Mecha Monkeys from Mars. I practiced reading words with EA in them. I memorized a poem called Singing Time.

Math:MALI: I did some more subtraction pages in my workbook. I did some Dreambox lessons about making 100.

MAX: I did Dreambox lessons about moving some of one number to the number you are adding it to in order to make it easier to add in your head. For example, instead of adding 202 + 157, you add 200 + 159. I did more workbook pages with shapes and patterns.

Science:
In our co-op Marine Biology class we learned about classification and made posters classifying different groups of marine animals. At home for science we started a unit about bodies. We named all the parts of the body we could think of and talked about how in some ways a body is like a car--there are lots of parts that need to work together for everything to run smoothly.

History:
We learned about Sparta & Athens. Spartans were more concerned about being physically strong and fighting, so in their schools the boys all learned to fight and being strong was really important. In Athens, it was more important to the people that the kids grow up to be educated about numbers and philosophy because they had a democracy and wanted the people to vote for good laws.

Tech (Engineering):
At the Curiosity Museum we built some really big Lego stairs. We also built some things with the little sunburst/circle things they have in the building room.

Music:
Our homework this week was to identify skips on the music staff. We did a song called Jungle Rhythm in class and practiced breaking up the beat and moving to a steady beat. We listened to more of our new songs.

We went to the Rec Center and had some fun in the Racquetball court
