Week 39

This week in history we learned about the voyages of Captain Cook. We also learned about the British colonization of Australia. For science we learned about what causes tides and a little bit about tide pools. My mom wanted us to learn about tidepools and the tides because we are taking a trip to the Oregon Coast. It will be our first time visiting the ocean. We are really excited about it.

We did our language arts and math lessons.

Max: We got the new Legend of Zelda game today and I'm so excited about it. You get to make really cool stuff. I made a club with a minecar at the end of it. I am really enjoying it so far. I read a lot of Ultimate Spider-man comics this week. They are about Miles Morales.

Mali: I made a lot of projects for DIY.org this week. I wanted something to decorate so I turned an old mask of mine into a kind of cool raccoon mask.

We also went with our grandparents to recycle the aluminum cans and some other metal we had and made $31 to share.

I reached 300 followers on DIY.org!!

Week 38

This week in history we learned about the formation of the United States and the drafting of the Constitution. We also talked a bit about the European Union because we were comparing how the Colonies were acting like their own little countries and how different things would be had they not joined together. We had our last makerspace class and it was just a party.

Max: I did Math lessons and language arts lessons. I read more of The Belgian Twins for part of my assignments. It takes place during WWI when Germany was invading Belgium, even though they were a neutral country. Germany wanted to get to France by going through Belgium. I did my piano practice and had a piano lesson.

Mali: I am working on fractions still in math. I did a lesson that compared fractions with different denominators using diagrams. In my writing lesson my mom read passages from Mary Poppins for a couple lessons and also from Peter Rabbit. I made an animation to go along to a song that I like.

Week 37

We had our Maker Space showcase this week. We also went to the Tulip Festival at Thanksgiving Point. Honestly a lot of the flowers weren't blooming yet, but we still had a fun time. We got lunch afterwards. We went on a hike up Rock Canyon. We went to a May Day celebration at a park in Provo. They had live music and a Maypole and did a variety of May pole dances which was fun.

We also learned about the Boston Tea Party and the Revolutionary War in history this week. We learned about infrared light in science and found some interesting videos about IR light to watch on YouTube.

Weeks 34-35

This week we learned about the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, and Moldova in Geography. In history we learned about one of the emperors of the Manchu dynasty who really wanted to compile all of the great books of China so more people could be knowledgable of the science and literature, etc.  He compiled 36,000 volumes of what was considered to be the best of China's writings. He had 7 copies made so they could be in different libraries around China. He also worked to actively suppress/destroy any negative writings about the Manchu dynasty, since they were still unpopular among a lot of people since they were seen as outsiders who invaded and took over.

We came up with some prompts for ChatGPT this week. It was really interesting to see what we could get. We had it write poems of various types. We also got access to Google's Bard this week. We haven't played around with it as much yet but so far it's poems are much worse than ChatGPT's.

Max: This week one of my songs was In the Hall of the Mountain King. It was pretty simple to learn because the left hand is simple, but it is a really fun one to play. I read issue 100 this week in the Ultimate Spider-Man comic series. I passed where my mom had read to when she was reading this series. In math I am working on mixed numbers and converting them to improper fractions and also vice versa.

Mali: I am still reading the Ricky Ricotta book 1. I only have a couple chapters left. In Math I am working on decimals, well I was but I finished that section. I made an animation this week and also recorded and editing a video of me getting my room cleaned up.

Week 33

This week was the last week of our jump pass so we went to Lowe's and jumped. We learned about tarantulas. We went to Makerspace. We did math lessons and language arts. We started listening to the book Howliday Inn.

Mali: I started reading the first Ricky Ricotta book. I did the drawings you can see below.

Max: I decided to play the Pink Panther song for our recital in June so I will keep practicing that. This week I worked on a Zelda song, In the Hall of the Mountain King (a new one), and Greensleeves. I passed of Greensleeves after only one week. My mom and I joked that now I'm ready for Purplepants.

Max finished up the 5th grade decimals lessons.

Playing Pentago with Mom. We each won a few games
and lost track of who won how many.

Week 32

This week for geography we learned about Lichtenstein and Switzerland. Lichtenstein is the 6th smallest nation in the world. In Geography we learned about the British takeover of India and how it was kind of weird because it was largely done by the company of the East Indies Trading Company. That would be like Costco taking over to rule a country today. We listened to the audiobook of Bunnicula. We went and jumped at Lowes. We went on a bike ride.

Max: I've been working on different operations with decimals for math. I am still reading the Ultimate Spider-Man series.

Mali: I read a whole story backwards. It was fun! Mom doesn't want me to read all my reading assignments backwards though. In Math I learned about factors and also equal number sentences.

We went downtown with mom and got a cinnamon roll
and boba smoothies

We also went out for dinner at JJs Burgers
