Week 23

In science this week we learned about disease. We learned about how some diseases are spread and how deadly they are. Airborne viruses spread pretty easily. Measles is one of the very most contagious diseases known.

We assembled a gingerbread house kit.

We learned about the countries of Peru and Ecuador in our geography studies and how to find them on a map.

We went sledding at Rock Canyon Park.

Mali: In Math this week I worked on mental strategies for addition. I read some of my practice books for reading. I had a lot of fun working on drawings on the ipad. We also did a Drawing for Kids lesson from YouTube. I went to the Christkindlmarkt with my mom. The traffic was really crazy and it was busy but we still had fun. I got a felted wool panda purse.

Max: I drew a picture for my DIY.org account profile. I finished up fractions in Math. I read more of the Diary of a Minecraft Zombie book that I am reading.

We sorted the buttons from mom's button jar. Max got all the sparkly clear ones.

Mali got the shiny metallic ones.

Week 22

Mali read this book this week

We learned about confirmation bias

Mali working on math using the base 10 blocks.

Dinovember writing activity

In science class this week we learned about diseases. We made WANTED posters for some different illnesses and learned a little more about them. Mali did COVID-19 and Max did the Black Plague. Our mom did rabies. We also learned about medicine practices before modern germ theory. Back when people thought illness was caused by an imbalance of different fluids in the body or bad air, bloodletting was a common treatment that definitely was not effective.

We learned more about Martin Luther for history. His actions resulting in a lot of religious changes in Europe.

We did a writing activity about different things the dinosaurs did for Dinovember.

Max: I finished up Division in my math this week.

Mali: I am working on Subtraction still. I learned about checking subtraction problems by using addition.

Weeks 19-21

We got some Lego sets to build for our Exploring Technology class. Mali got a 3 in 1 set and built the space explorer guy. Max got a Lego Technic Jeep. They both had a lot of fun building their sets this week.

We had music class and also practiced our lessons this week. We also practiced our flash cards.

For Geography we are learning the countries of South America. The memory device to remember French Guyana is to think of a "French Guy On A Piece of Toast." Its so silly, but it really works to help you remember it.

Mali & Max Week 17

Mali: This week I started multi digit addition in math. It is not too hard. I just have to remember to add the right columns and then put the right answer in the right spot. I did a writing assignment about what fun things I did over the weekend.

Max: I finished all of the Diary of a Minecraft Zombie books that we have at our house so my mom got the next ten books from the library. They are fun books. In math I am working on reviewing all of my multiplication facts. We got a fun app called Sushi Monster that helps me practice the multiplication facts.

In science we learned about nerves. We learned that you have a really long nerve that goes from your spine to your foot. It's called the sciatic nerve. It's crazy that it is just one cell! All animals have nervous systems except for sponges. We also learned about the respiratory system. Not all animals have lungs. Bugs don't have lungs, they have little holes around their bodies called spiracles. Amphibians breathe through both their skin and their lungs. Fish have gills. In people and some other animals the diaphragm is a muscle that is responsible for moving up and down and that helps the lungs fill up with air by adjusting the air pressure.

Scootering on the river trail this week

Making things out of clay

Mali made these cute little clay critters

We went exploring up Slate Canyon

Halloween -- we were both penguins

We made Christmas countdowns out of our Halloween candy

In our house, November is DINOvember. It is really fun.

Mali figured out how to play one of her music class songs on the xylophone

Mali & Max Week 18

Mali: I finished my math section on addition and am working on subtraction. I am having a bit of trouble with the trading/regrouping part so we are practicing in some more.

Max: I finished multiplication and am working on learning and practicing division.

In science we learned more about the body systems and we did a fun art project where we traced the different body systems on tracing paper and put them together in a body with the different layers, one for each system.

In music class we have been playing Turkey in the Straw. We are also doing Jingle Bells and Twinkle Twinkle Star. Mali has also been learning to play What Do You Do With A Drunken Sailor on her own. Max is working on a Kirby song and The Entertainer. He picked out the Tetris Theme song by ear and his mom was very impressed.

We played Trash Pandas and Blobby's Pizza.

We had fun making little human-like characters with the blocks

Max built a very tall Jenga block tower
