Mali & Max Week 23

Language Arts

MAX: I finished reading Ricky Ricotta book 1. I used my points to get a Demogorgon minifig. I did quite a few Explode the Code pages. I started and finished Ricky Ricotta book 2 about the mosquitos from Mercury. Now I'm reading book 3 which is about the Voodoo Vultures from Venus.

MALI: I read The Fox. I read Up! I read Birds. I read a couple other mini books.  I did a bunch of pages in my Explode the Code workbook. I did some Reading Eggs. I finally had my DIBELS. I was supposed to have it a couple weeks ago but I was pretty sick.

Math
MAX: I did Dreambox lessons. I did more workbook pages on shapes and made a picture out of shapes. It is a penguin.

MALI: I did some dreambox lessons. I placed numbers on a hundreds chart in one lesson. In another I practiced identifying numbers 0-50 on a 100 bead frame.

Science
In our marine biology class we learned about the oceans. We learned how the ocean water is salt water.
History
We learned about the early Greeks. We learned about their alphabet and how some of our letters came from that alphabet. We also learned about Homer and one of the stories of Homer, the one where Odysseus blinds the Cyclops who trapped him and his men in the cave. We learned about theoriginal Olympic Games.
Music
our homework was identifying and coloring the different hand signs for the solfege. We listened to the songs and got to accompany Old Paint on the autoharp at class.

Tech (Engineering):
We built the next project in our engineering kit. It was about columns. We watch some videos on YouTube about Greek architecture and their use of columns, including identifying the three types of Greek columns. It was fun because this tied in with our history lesson on early Greeks as well.

Other
In Explore the World we learned about the seven continents and talked about how the earth is made of two hemispheres and covered ~75% with water. We talked about the compass rose and the four cardinal directions. We learned that there are 195 countries. We decorated our “Passports” with stickers of different countries, read a myth from Finland, jumped around to the continents on our world map, and made paper airplanes to help us travel.

We went to the mall with our Dad and got to ride the animals around

Mali: I have been drawing a lot of mermaids this week

Max & Mali Week 22

L. Arts:

MAX: I started reading Ricky Ricotta book 1. I like it. I started my new language arts coursebook.

MALI: I did some Reading eggs. I read a new book called The Fox. I finished lesson 12 in All About Reading.

Math:

MAX: I did quite a bit of Dreambox. I did some workbook pages on shapes and went over three dimensional solids.

MALI: I did a bit of dreambox. I was sick for part of the week and we also had a dentist appointment and my mom was sick so it was not the most productive school week.

Science:
we watched a lot of science videos because mom was sick for a couple days. We watched some short videos about the sun and mercury, Venus, earth and mars. We also watched quite a few “The Making Of” videos that are like How It’s Made.

History:
we watched some history videos. They were about Ancient Rome. We learned about how the Roman Empire was big and lasted a long time and split into two and gave rise to a lot of the modern European language

Music: we started our new curriculum for the semester called Blue Bugs. There is a funny new song called Johnny Get Your Hair Cut.

Tech (Engineering):
we got a new engineering kit and we did the first project that was a pyramid. We then watched some videos about pyramids and simple structures like post and lintel. We also got some of our other building toys out and built pyramids and other structures.

Mali sick and getting groceries and medicine at Costco. The pharmacy took FOREVER.

Fun building pyramids and other things

Learned about geometric solids and went over names for some of them.

Max - Week 21

L. Arts:
I looked at a picture and found nouns in the picture. Then I alphabetized them. I finished level K of my language arts program! I also read quite a few stories to finish the reader. Mom bought the next level so I will start that next week.

Math:
We played a new math game. I think it’s called Number Force. You form heroes who defeat villains with a specific target number by adding the hero parts together. Did a lesson on shapes and made some pictures with the pattern blocks. I also did a lot of Dreambox.

Science:
We went to the zoo. It was neat. The lions were napping together. The mama and baby orangutan were hanging out in a hammock. We rode the carousel, too. We also went to the Life Science museum at BYU. They have an evolution exhibit, and part of it compares a wolf skull to domestic dog skulls.
History:
We learned about the Mycenaeans and how they made bronze weapons that helped them defeat other groups. Eventually they were defeated by the “barbarians” which were what they called people who didn’t live in cities. We also found a really cool 360 degree photo of Ramses VI's tomb that we enjoyed looking at.
Music: We don’t start music class again until next week. But we started listening to the songs on the CD for this semester.

Tech (Engineering): We built with legos and duplo sets. We had fun making our Lego sets and also making stuff on our own. We put together puzzles. We built some cool domino chains.
