Mali Weeks 1-3

L. Arts: I did the first few lessons in my new reading program. I am doing All About Reading.
I like that there are worksheets with cute pictures. I also wrote some songs and had my family
sing them for my play. I made puppets and puppet shows for the Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks,
and Red Riding Hood.

Math: I started my math and we talked about greater than/less than. We also counted items
up to 10 and learned about using a ten frame. We played with the math cubes after we did
learning activities with them. Mom ordered more math cubes because we liked building with
them and only had 100.

Science: We learned about cells and the history of cell theory. We watched a Bill Nye
about Cells and also a YouTube video that talked about the scientists who discovered cells.
We used our handheld microscopes to look at cells on our slides. We looked in our science
textbook at diagrams of plants and animal cells and discussed some differences between them.

History: We learned about pyramids. We watched a few videos about the on youtube. It
was interesting that they could make them when they didn’t have very strong tools. Even
today, we don’t know for sure how they built them but there are some different ideas.

Music: We learned some songs, including Let’s Play Music, Great Big Red Balloon, Do
Re Mi, Primary Chords and Magical Lamp. We got to practice the bells in Hickety Pickety
and Great Big Red Balloon. We made some paper balloons at home and laminated them.
We are practicing the solfege hand signs.

Tech (Engineering): We had fun building with our new math cubes. We built little human
figures and also some other structures. They are kind of tricky to build with because they
only have one attachment nub.  Tied in with our history we learned about buildings and
watched a video about the Burj Khalifa, which is the current tallest building in the world.
We also watched a video about people basejumping off of it with their “flying squirrel suits”.
I came up with a space game and my brothers helped me make some shrinkydink pieces
for it. My brother Leif helped me make the game board and write the rules.

Max Weeks 1-3

L. Arts: I read quite a few mini books. I did some spelling of words. I was having fun making word art one day with my spelling words. They are kind of fun to make but can be hard to read. I played a word building game we have.

Math: I started my math and we talked about greater than/less than. We also counted items up to 10 and learned about using a ten frame. We played with the math cubes after we did learning activities with them. Mom ordered more math cubes because we liked building with them and only had 100. I also did some Math Seeds activities on the computer.

Science: We learned about cells and the history of cell theory. We watched a Bill Nye about Cells and also a YouTube video that talked about the scientists who discovered cells. We used our handheld microscopes to look at cells on our slides. We looked in our science textbook at diagrams of plants and animal cells and discussed some differences between them.

History: We learned about the great pyramids of Egypt. I learned about what type of material they are made out of, which is limestone. They made them with copper tools which is interesting because copper isn’t really that tough.

Music: We learned some songs, including Let’s Play Music, Great Big Red Balloon, Do Re Mi, Primary Chords and Magical Lamp. We got to practice the bells in Hickety Pickety and Great Big Red Balloon. We made some paper balloons at home and laminated them. We are practicing the solfege hand signs.
