Mali & Max Weeks 18-20

Language Arts
MAX- I worked more on endings -ed and -ing and identifying the base word. Read a new mini book.

MALI- I read a new story in my reader. I did some Reading Eggs activities. I finished lesson 55 on Reading Eggs.

Math:
MAX- I played some Math Dice. I also did some workbook pages. I did some Dreambox activities about dividing shapes into equal parts.

MALI- I did some Dreambox activities on more and less. I started my Chapter Four review/test in my math workbook.

Science
We read from our Everyday Amazing book and learned about how heat is energy and it is always on the move. The hotter something is, the more its molecules are vibrating.

History:
We learned about Nebuchadnezzar and the hanging gardens of Babylon. He built them for his wife because she hated living in a desert. She was from a mountainous place that was a lot more green.

Music
In class week each played a solo on our bells. We could play the major scale or the Do Mi Mi song. Our homework assignment was to identify the missing themes from Waltz of the Flowers on a worksheet and put a picture in that represented the theme.

Tech (Engineering):
We have been doing more pixel art with our Spielgaben set and also building with other building toys we have.
MAX - I made a penguin out of these star links.
MALI - I made a bunch of stuff out of playdoh.

Mali & Max Week 17

Language Arts

MAX: I practiced more with the -ed ending and -ing ending. I did a handwriting page. I read in the reader and read some mini books.

MALI: I started Lesson 11 in my All About Reading book. I read a new story in the reader called Jobs. I did some lessons on Reading Eggs. I practiced my flash cards.

Math
We did Dreambox lessons. We played Dragonwood. Mom won the game, but she didn’t defeat either of the dragons. We each defeated one.

MAX: I did more subtraction practice on my worksheets. I also played Math Dice.

MALI: I did some addition worksheets.

Science
In Hands On Science we learned about how the sun and the tilt of the earth makes the seasons. We also learned about how some cold-weather animals stay warm—penguins have waxy feathers (we colored our penguins and then gave them a spritz of water) and seals and polar bears have blubber. We tried sticking our hands in ice water just normally and also inside a layer of “blubber” (shortening over a latex glove). The blubber helped a lot! And we also learned about snowflakes and how the molecular structure makes them hexagonal. And tried to make 6 pointed snowflakes.

History
We learned about Ashurbanipal and the Assyrians. They were really brutal and treated the people they conquered horribly. Many cities would just surrender when they knew the Assyrians were coming so they wouldn’t have to be treated so terribly.

Music
We practiced songs and our new Christmas song. Our class this week was just kids, no parents. We walked over by ourselves because Mom had to take our sister to work. Wee learned what MI RE DO & SOL SOL DO look like when written on the staff. The word “notation” means to place the notes how they are written on the staff.

Tech (Engineering)
We had fun building with our Spielgaben manipulatives. We built towers and starbursts and also did some pixel art on the board. We also have been playing this game on the iPad that you have to make tunnels and use gravity to get a ball to a goal. It is a pretty challenging puzzle game.

Other
This was the last week of co-op for this semester. We start again near the end of January. We went to the Curiosity Museum and played outside for a while because it wasn’t too cold.

Week 16 - Max

L. Arts: I did a reading assessment. I learned about the double E phonogram. Mom read me a story about bunnies and I answered some questions about it.

Math: I am working on subtraction within 10. I did some workbook pages and I also did some Dreambox lessons.

Science: We learned about how scientists group animals by their characteristics. We learned about different groups in the animal kingdom and their defining characteristics. We went to the Butterfly Biosphere at Thanksgiving Point. We went in the bee room where we hadn’t gone before. It was cool because you could see the bees working and they had a plexiglass hive that we could look into.

History: We learned about the Phoenicians. We learned about how they invented a way to get the purple dye from ocean snails. It was really really stinky though. Purple day was three times more expensive than gold per pound. We also learned about how they had unique ways to make glass.
Music: We practiced baby steps on the staff. We sang our Five Fat Turkeys song. We practiced our handsigns and repeating note sequences. We also did some introduction to reading music notes on the staff and playing our bells to follow the notes.

Tech (Engineering): We didn’t do any specific engineering projects this week but we did go to the Ninja Playground where we got to interact with a lot of simple machines, especially ramps and levers and pulleys. There is a “teeter totter” sort of thing that you walk across but you also have to balance on it. Lots of neat tricky things to try. Oh actually we did make an engineering project at one of our co-op classes. We made a model of a hand to show how the tendons work to move the fingers.

Week 16 - Mali

L. Arts: I did lesson ten in All About Reading. I used a die to select different words on my practice page. It was fun. I am practicing short vowel words with o in the middle.

Math: I did Dreambox lessons about identifying numbers in the teens on a ten frame.

Science: We learned about how scientists group animals by their characteristics. We learned about different groups in the animal kingdom and their defining characteristics. We went to the Butterfly Biosphere at Thanksgiving Point. We went in the bee room where we hadn’t gone before.
