Max - Week 13

L. Arts: I read two of the review practice sheets in the back of the book. I did a worksheet on identifying nouns and verbs. I read a new story from the I See Sam series, Matt at Bat. I read some mini books, including Clocks.

Math: I played Number Dice Junior with my mom few times and also with my sister. I practiced using as many of the five days as I could to make a target number. I won. I also did some workbook pages practicing addition and some Dreambox lessons on the computer.

Science: We learned about atoms. We built models with Skittles and also as a group with balloons. We learned that the atoms of different elements have different numbers of protons, neutrons and electrons.

History: We learned about King Tutankhamen. He wasn’t a very important or notable pharaoh but his tomb wasn’t discovered until the early 1900s so he is really famous. His tomb was undisturbed which was notable because so many were raided.
Music: We focused a lot on baby steps on the staff. A major chord is made up of all baby steps. A baby step goes from a line to a space or a space to a line. We identified mi-re-do and sol-sol-do in our Circle to the Left song.

Tech (Engineering): We built a fort wall patterned after Jamestown with the building stuff at Thanksgiving Point. We also built cup towers with a bunch of cups we had gotten for a neighborhood party game. We built a really tall one.

Mali - Week 13

Language Arts: I did a lesson and read the new story Hit the Gas. I practiced my phonogram cards and my word cards. I did some Reading Eggs. I did a Build A Sentence activity with my mom. You swap out different words in a sentence to change it to match the picture, then draw a new picture card and change the sentence again.

Math:  I played Number Dice Junior. I did some Dreambox. I built a 100 chart. I did some workbook pages. One was fun because it had mommy and baby butterflies and I found all the babies even if they weren’t in the same row.

His tomb was undisturbed which was notable because so many were raided and robbed a long time ago.

We also built cup towers at home with a bunch of cups we had gotten for a neighborhood party game. We built a really tall one.

Max - Week 12

L. Arts: Max- I read minibooks. I finished up the lessons on SH/TH/CH. I practiced reading a list of Silent E words and I read A LOT more in one minute than I did the first time I read the list a few weeks ago. I did an assessment and had to read a poem and two passages. I only made one mistake in each of the passages, and no mistakes in the poem.

Math: We practiced adding on. One day we practiced math facts while jumping on the trampoline. We made Candy Countdowns to Christmas and practiced couting and writing numbers. I built a 100 chart by filling in where the numbers go on Dreambox. I practiced adding as well.

Science: We learned about air. We learned about the layers of the atmosphere. We used a blower and floated coffee filters, balls, and little ghosts made out of coffee filters in it. We also had ghost races where we blew them with straws.
History: We learned about the Middle Kingdom of Egypt. The Egyptians were defeated by the Hyksos because the Hyksos had chariots and bows and arrows. But about 100 years later, the Egyptian princes joined together and used the same technology to drive out the Hyksos. We learned about Hatshepsut as well, the only female pharaoh of her time.
Music: We practiced Chords in Pieces and our other songs. We could wear our costumes to class if we wanted to. This week was a “no parents” class.

Tech (Engineering): We made our Candy Countdowns. We started out using staples and tape but then figured out that hot glue worked a lot better.

Other: No Tumbling this week because of Halloween. We had fun trick or treating. We had a halloween party with our co-op. We practiced our Spanish lessons. We are learning how to answer and ask questions. We learned a new type of question, which is a statement with “verdad” at the end, which is like saying “right?” at the end of an English sentence.

Mali - Week 12

L. Arts: I read some of my word flip books. I practiced flash cards. I read the story Jam again. I did the assessment on Reading Eggs and it said I am at lesson 51.

Math: We practiced adding on. One day we practiced math facts while jumping on the trampoline. We made Candy Countdowns to Christmas and practiced couting and writing numbers. In Dreambox I have been exploring how numbers can be used to measure distances. Using lengths of ten, I am building a number line model.

Science: We learned about air. We learned about the layers of the atmosphere. We used a blower and floated coffee filters, balls, and little ghosts made out of coffee filters in it. We also had ghost races where we blew them with straws.

My Candy Countdown to Christmas (made with Halloween candy)

I drew this picture of what we could do with the air stream from the vacuum.
It was so cool how we could tilt it sideways and it would still hold the ball.
